ALEXANDRIA, VA (November 10, 2010) – The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation’s (RBFF) Take Me Fishing™ campaign and Discovery Education will host a workshop featuring their jointly developed Explore the Blue educational program on November 11, 2010, during the National Science Teachers Association’s (NSTA) Baltimore Area Conference. At the workshop, teachers will get a firsthand look at resources available on ExploretheBlue.com, including digital learning activities designed to bring critical aquatic issues to life for students and excite their enthusiasm for outdoor activities, especially boating and fishing. Teachers who attend the workshop will also have a chance to win a classroom’s worth of Ready2Fish fishing rods, reels and tackle provided by Sports Authority.

“With the recent tragedy in the Gulf, helping children understand the value of boating and fishing and of clean, healthy waterways has become more important than ever,” said RBFF President and CEO Frank Peterson. “Our participation in the NSTA conference will introduce teachers to free tools they can use to instill in their students a lasting appreciation for outdoor recreation.”

The workshop will feature activities teachers can easily take back to the classroom, including elementary standards-aligned lesson plans, a unique virtual fishing game called “Thrill of the Catch,” and tips for creating an aquarium terrarium. Teachers will also learn about other Explore the Blue materials for encouraging the next generation’s interest in boating, fishing and the environment.

ExploretheBlue.com is an online initiative designed to empower teachers and parents to engage youngsters in a dialogue about the importance of outdoor recreational activities. Through the site, teachers, parents and children can access free tools, games and activities that make learning fun and create an enduring connection with the nation’s waterways. The program can also enhance RBFF stakeholders’ own programs for introducing youth to the outdoors.
